Vista Colina Programs and Services

Vista Colina Emergency Family Shelter, located in northern Phoenix, strives to assist homeless families by assessing their individual needs and connecting them with appropriate community services. A variety of supportive services are offered, including programs that empower both children and adults.

Families with children make up the fastest-growing segment of the homeless population. More than 200 families sought shelter at Vista Colina last year alone, bringing nearly 500 children to the shelter. One in five victims of homelessness falls under the age of 18, increasing the importance of the developmental programming provided for children at the family shelter.

Vista Colina relies heavily on volunteers and donations to support all of the shelter’s programs. To learn more about specific services offered at Vista Colina Emergency Family Shelter, click on one of the below links:

Shelter Services
Mission: Provide homeless families with emergency shelter in a safe, stable and supportive environment.

Families who are eligible for services may stay at the shelter for up to 90 days. Families stay in their own one or two bedroom apartment and have access to food, clothing and hygiene products. They work with our staff and participate in a variety of programs that help them to become more stable and equipped to handle life.

Shelter staff remains on-site 24 hours a day to answer questions and ensure the safety of each family. Staff members also help parents to develop life skills, including how to properly clean their apartments. Each parent is asked to complete three hours of chores each week in lieu of rent and must pass a drug screen prior to entering the shelter.

Case Management
Mission: Assist homeless families by assessing their individual needs and connecting them with appropriate community services.

All adults who stay at the shelter receive case management services. Our case management staff assists our clients in becoming self-sufficient.

Vista Colina’s case managers direct each family to resources for securing transitional housing, receiving child support, veteran’s benefits, healthcare, statewide programs and more. This assistance allows parents to navigate an extensive network of services more efficiently.

Clients are expected to secure employment and benefits, save 80% of their income and show initiative by making specific plans for the future success of their family.

CASS CARES (Continued Available Resources & Extended Services)
This case managed program is designed to assist families in remaining self-sufficient after they move out of the Vista Colina Shelter and to prevent homelessness in the future. Clients may receive services for up to one year from their exit date.

Child Care Program
Mission: Ensure stability for children in crisis by providing a safe, nurturing and developmentally appropriate environment at no cost to the parent.

Vista Colina's National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) accredited Developmental Child Care Program is located on the shelter campus and may be utilized throughout the week. Teachers implement appropriate activities that provide an environment where children will learn and thrive.

After School Programs
Vista Colina has a closely supervised after school program with many educational and enrichment components including homework assistance, computer training, field trips, arts & crafts classes, mentoring programs and more.

Adult Programs
Vista Colina provides a variety of classes on parenting techniques, budgeting, conflict resolution and basic living skills. Staff members, outside agencies and volunteers come together to make these programs available on a regular basis.

These programs are offered throughout the year and are required for adult clients of the family shelter. Providing parents with the tools for success allows them to provide better lives for their children.
