Families with children make up the fastest-growing segment of the homeless population. More than 200 families sought shelter at Vista Colina last year alone, bringing nearly 500 children to the shelter. One in five victims of homelessness falls under the age of 18, increasing the importance of the developmental programming provided for children at the family shelter. Vista Colina relies heavily on volunteers and donations to support all of the shelters programs. Shelter
Services Families who are eligible for services may stay at the shelter for up to 90 days. Families stay in their own one or two bedroom apartment and have access to food, clothing and hygiene products. They work with our staff and participate in a variety of programs that help them to become more stable and equipped to handle life. Shelter staff remains on-site 24 hours a day to answer questions and ensure the safety of each family. Staff members also help parents to develop life skills, including how to properly clean their apartments. Each parent is asked to complete three hours of chores each week in lieu of rent and must pass a drug screen prior to entering the shelter. Case
Management All adults who stay at the shelter receive case management services. Our case management staff assists our clients in becoming self-sufficient. Vista Colinas case managers direct each family to resources for securing transitional housing, receiving child support, veterans benefits, healthcare, statewide programs and more. This assistance allows parents to navigate an extensive network of services more efficiently. Clients are expected to secure employment and benefits, save 80% of their income and show initiative by making specific plans for the future success of their family. CASS
