Central Arizona Shelter Services (CASS) Receives $491,000 Federal Grant to Support Homeless Veterans Sole State organization to receive this grant United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced $24 million in grants for homeless veteran programs in 37 states, including here in Phoenix, Arizona through CASS' provision of veteran-specified emergency shelter beds. The $491,000 grant specifically for CASS will ensure that up to 43 homeless veterans will have shelter and access to services necessary to end their homelessness. As indicated in the VA's press release, the VA has the largest integrated network of homeless assistance programs in the country. Here in Arizona, collaborative efforts between CASS, VA, and several other community programs have helped to maintain the level of support offered to all veterans that find themselves without shelter, medical care, and other social service assistance. While residing at CASS, veterans will be connected with additional supportive services available through the Healthcare for Homeless Veterans Program at the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center and transitional housing available through US Veterans Initiative (US Vets). “CASS is our greatest collaborative partner," indicated Michael Leon, Coordinator of the Healthcare for Homeless Veterans Program at the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center in Phoenix. Today, it is estimated that 200,000 veterans may be homeless on an average night, which represents a 20% reduction during the past six years. In Maricopa County, it is estimated that there are over 2,500 homeless veterans. Through this award, Maricopa Co. will have over 100 beds (66 US Veterans Initiative and 43 CASS beds) available for homeless veterans.
